Over the past few months, I’ve been doing a lot of research for my thesis on personal branding. The more I read the more I realised just how important personal branding is for bloggers. So with my newfound knowledge in tow, I started thinking about how to create an authentic personal brand as a blogger, and who could I think of that had already done it so well.
When we think about authentic personal brands we gravitate towards people who are unashamedly themselves. Flaws and all – we love them for it. Consider Cardi B, Rihanna and Arianna Grande. Your closest friends. Think about your favourite bloggers and why you keep going back to their site. Their personality brings their writing to life.
In today’s highly saturated blogging world this my dear reader is your secret weapon. So I’m going to talk you through how to create an authentic personal brand so you can guard it fiercely.
Identify what your brand is
The first step to creating an authentic personal brand is figuring out who you are. Wow, deep.
How do you do that?
Ask yourself a lot of questions. If you struggle to answer them don’t be afraid to message a couple of your friends and see how they would describe you.
Your personal brand encompasses your values, interests and everything about you that a person would want to know. As bloggers, we share so much of ourselves on the Internet that we open ourselves up to a lot of criticism and comparison. When that happens we can lose ourselves in the whirlwind of building our self-esteem and grappling for those all-important likes and comments.
The focus shifts to who we want to be, and what we want our audience to think of us rather than who we actually are. Taking time to reconnect with the core elements that give your blog it’s “you-ness” (nope it’s not a real word but it definitely should be) not only makes for more engaging content but will also make you happier in the long run.
Create a vivid picture
Though your personal brand is built on you as a person – it doesn’t have to be an exact replica. You want to take key elements of your personality and make them more vivid. Imagine you’re making a reality TV show of which you’re the subject. Think about Beyonce or Jenna Marbles.
What do we know about Beyonce? She’s a great singer, she has incredible dance routines and she is constantly talking about female empowerment. Do we think Beyonce swans around the house in gold hot pants all the time preaching about how she doesn’t need a man? Probably not.
What do we know about Jenna Marbles? She has two gorgeous dogs, and she makes really random videos of, well, just about anything! Do we believe Jenna Marbles really that weird 100% of the time? The answer is probably not. But she emphasises these parts of her character because it makes her stand out and it makes us fall in love with her.
Once you know what makes you unique it becomes a hell of a lot easier to take these parts and project them.
Don’t make it all about you
Rocking your personal brand is about more than just talking about yourself all the time. What inspires you? What advice can you offer your readers? Do you engage with your audience? These are all things that can enhance your personal brand. They give a true insight into who you are.
Lastly, the most important thing you can do for your personal brand is to have fun with it. There are so many bloggers out there now that there really is room to do anything. Just because it hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it won’t work and hey, who better than you to do it?
What about you? What advice would you give on how to create an authentic personal brand? Is there anything I’ve missed out? Let me know in the comments!
