Since finishing uni three years ago I was quickly thrust into the world of reading for …*gasp* fun. At the time I was in a pretty dark place and I was desperately clamouring for something bigger than myself to hold on to or believe in. Among other things, books became my teachers and in learning more about myself and the world we live in I was able to begin my self luuuuurve journey.

But before we begin a quick disclaimer. Stuff is about to get woo. If you’re offended or turned off by anything remotely spiritual, this is your one chance to dip out before I wave my sage stick at you. Om Shanti Shanti.

Okay, now all the bad vibes and negative energy are out of the way here are my top 5 personal development books you need to read in 2019.

 

Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead – Brene Brown

What’s it about?

Ever since watching Brene Brown’s TED Talk on the Power of Vulnerability I just became enamoured with her and her way of thinking. Not only is her talk one of the most viewed in TED history (yup!), but she just emulates this energy that you can’t help but relate to.

Her book Daring Greatly is born from years of psychology research and deals with how to reframe vulnerability and overcome a scarcity mindset.

 

Why read it?

I think at the moment we’re living in this world where at the same time as we crave authenticity we’re also scared to show who we really are due to fear. Fear of not being accepted or being ridiculed. The fear of not being enough or saying something wrong. Especially in today’s social media driven world it’s a massive disservice to yourself NOT to read it.

 

One more thing…

If you’re a fan of audiobooks I definitely recommend listening to the audio version. Brene is pretty hilarious and she’s given me a newfound love for the Southern accent. Y’all need to listen to it.

 

The Secret – Rhonda Byrne

What’s it about?

The Secret was another personal development book introduced to me by a close friend and it’s basically a beginners guide to the law of attraction. The book claims that through the power of your thoughts you can change your reality. Rhonda Byrne not only introduces the concept and its history but also shares systems for putting the law of attraction in place in your own life.

 

Why read it?

I think it’s safe to say The Secret is simultaneously one of the most popular, and most controversial self-help books out there. For me reading that book was like being faced with the decision between the blue pill and the red pill. Sure you could go back to the way your life was, or you could go on this incredible internal adventure. So I chose the former and I’ve never for a moment regretted it. In fact, my only regret is wishing I’d read it sooner.

 

One more thing…

The Secret is also a documentary you can watch on Netflix and if you loved the first book there are sequels books: The Magic (about practising gratitude) and The Power (about the practical application of The Secret)

 

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth – T. Harv Eker

What’s it about?

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind is a step by step guide to learning all things money. From saving to investing to learned money behaviours. This is a book I feel like should be distributed at schools instead of the dummies guide to building your own never to be used spice rack.

 

Why read it?

It’s a smorgasbord of everything that makes a book great: it’s pretty funny, there are some serious holy-shit-it-all-makes-sense-now moments and it’s a quick read. As soon as I finished it I gave it to my friend and we spent the next week messaging back and forth about how great it was and the insights we’d gained.

If you’re serious about changing your mindset around money and learning why you have money blocks, whether that’s struggling to save or always being in debt, buy this book today.

 

One more thing…

The book has exercises in it for a reason. Don’t make the mistake of skipping past them. I actually ended up reading it twice as I missed half the exercises the first time. If you’re into learning more about money patterns I also recommend checking out Manifestation Babe, in fact, it was her podcast that led me to this book in the first place!

 

The Miracle Morning – Hal Elrod

What’s it about?

The Miracle Morning was one of the first ever personal development books I read. I was captivated by Hal Elrod’s story (and trust me it is a STORY) and immediately I set the principles into practice.

Hal takes you through six daily practices that he believes have the power to transform your day and in turn your life just by waking up a little earlier. Woah.

 

Why read it?

At a time when I was battling with depression and crippling anxiety, this book gave me a reason to wake up in the morning. Though my morning routine still needs some work (I blame Instagram) I still regularly meditate, reflect and work on my mindset. I know for sure I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.

 

One more thing…

If you love the book I also recommend joining The Miracle Morning Facebook community. It’s a wonderful support group for anybody who has read the book and is looking to make serious changes in their life. As an added bonus Hal regularly interacts in there too.

 

The Universe Has Your Back: Transform Your Fear to Faith – Gabrielle Bernstein

What’s it about?

The book takes the reader through a journey of how to overcome fears in any aspect of their lives to pursue a life they’ve always dreamed of. It sounds like such a broad sweeping statement but like I said before fear stops so many of us from even starting all these great things that we’re destined to do.

 

Why read it?

I’m not quite sure what led me to this book, but I’m so glad I bought it. From start to finish the book felt like a warm hug that I didn’t know I needed. It was a pretty emotional read for me and it spoke to me on so many levels. If you’re just getting started with spirituality or want to understand yourself on a deeper level this is definitely the book to get stuck in to.

 

One more thing…

I also bought the accompanying card deck which is filled with beautifully illustrated affirmation cards. I haven’t read up on correct card pulling technique, but when I feel *called* I just spread them out on my bed and pick a card to give me a focus for the day.

 

Final thoughts on personal development books

You don’t have to be in a dark place to want to change or want to learn, but for me, that was the catalyst. In the darkness of depression and chronic pain I just wanted to feel alive again. If you’re already a happy-go-lucky ray of sunshine then these books are just as valuable for maintaining that feel-good glow you and the people around you have come to love.

If on the other hand, you are like I was when I started this journey, don’t wait another day. Life is moving on anyway. Make the decision to move and grow with it, don’t let the tide sweep you away.
