How to Actually Accomplish Your Goals in 2019

With 2019 ominously looming over our heads, it’s about that time of year in the weird limbo period between Christmas and 2019, where everyone either gets introspective or starts freaking the fuck out. Sometimes both at the same time.

Looking back over the year 2018 got off to a rocky start. I was in and out of the doctors constantly, I cut ties with a close friend and it was a really turbulent time for me. Towards the middle of the year, things began to turn around. After months of trying to work out what was wrong, I was given priority for surgery and I started writing again after a two-year hiatus. I also decided to launch my own Instagram and Pinterest marketing agency and I began to travel again.

If I had to sum it all up and notice one common theme across everything it was that 2018 was the year of ME. I put myself, my dreams, my goals above anyone else for the first time. And you know what? It was fucking terrifying incredible.

If 2019 continues down this path then it really is going to be a year to remember, but you know me I love to share. I don’t want 2019 just to be my best year yet – I want it to be yours too.

It’s no secret that most new years resolutions don’t actually stick. But I want to knock down those barriers together and not just chase a thrill or a moment – but build a life. An existence that we’re proud of.

Reflect

So remember how I said this is the time of year that people start looking inward and then panicking? That’s exactly what we’re going to do. This is going to sound crazy but bear with me. In that process of looking inward – the one that’s all rainbows, butterflies, hopes and dreams. The one where everything is pink and cupcakes are given freely. I want you to tap into the panic. Yup.

I spent a lot of this year asking myself what I wanted and how I could make that happen and I can’t stress enough how important that reflection is if you want to accomplish your goals in 2019. But if you don’t go to the place of what you don’t want or who you don’t want to be you are limiting your own success. You need that polarity to show you the strength of your desires. It might be difficult and emotional to go there, the truth is I don’t know for sure. I can only go off my own experiences. All I can promise is that it will be worth it.

Audit your relationships

Goal setting in 2019 needs to be focused on you, but a huge part of your world is the people that are in it. When you grow as a person often before that period of massive breakthrough there is a time when you just feel like crap. You question whether you’re even on the right path or if any of this will be worth it.

However, those same questions we put to ourselves we often struggle to ask about those around us. And I get it because the seemingly simple question of “is this person serving me?” has huge repercussions for the future of that relationship.

Just because someone no longer serves you doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong, or even that they’ve done something wrong. It just means that you’ve learned and evolved as much as you can in that relationship and if something doesn’t shift –  then it’s no longer mutually beneficial.

If that person has really hurt you it’s important to do what you need to do to forgive them. And this isn’t for them, it’s for you. From experience, I can tell you that it’s not possible to move forward with your life while you’re still sticking the needle in the voodoo doll of relationships passed whether it’s a friend, family member or whatever else.

On the other hand, not all relationships need rehauling. If you have someone in your life who inspires and empowers you work out how you can spend more time around them!

Check in with yourself

I feel like 2018 was really a time where people began to realise, wow this mental health thing is real and people aren’t just attention seeking on the Internet. It’s my hope that in 2019 this continues and people can feel safe discussing their mental health. If we’re gonna have our best year ever, then we should totally have matching t-shirts it needs to start inside of us. Regularly check in with yourself and if you’re not okay there is NO shame in talking about it. With a friend, a stranger on the Internet or a mental health professional.

There’s also no shame in whatever you need to do to make yourself feel better. For some people that’s medication. For me it was talking to a therapist, actually, over the years there have been a few. If you’re sharing your deepest thoughts and feelings it needs to be with someone you’re comfortable with and not everyone will be a fit for you. Not all of your friends are equipped to talk about these things and that doesn’t mean you can’t be friends it just means you need to find someone you CAN talk to. Same goes for medication in that often it’s a process of trial and error.

In the depths of my depression, I used to believe that I was alone in how I felt. That everyone else was out there living the life they’d always dreamed of and that they were happy. But more importantly than happy, to me, was that they were normal. Whatever that meant.

Plot twist is that there is no ‘normal’ and there is no constantly happy either. What there is is life and sometimes it will be hard and you may even feel like giving up. I learned in those moments, days, weeks, and months that aren’t hard there is something so beautiful, so incredible that is worth all the struggles you will go through. Even if at the time it doesn’t feel like it.

Be a kind human

The last step in our blueprint for taking over the world achieving our goals in 2019 is to be kind. To ourselves and others. In 2019 I’m really excited to be working closely with one of my favourite charities to make this a reality. 

When it comes down to it, we’re all in this together and if you can make someone else’s life a little bit brighter you can be sure one day, one way or another, it will come back to you. It’s my belief that we spend our lives searching for the meaning of our individual existence when really there is no such thing as a singular purpose. We’re all here together.

I can’t tell you what to hope for or exactly what to do because that’s yours to decide. All I can I do is shine a little bit of light on the path and hope it becomes easier to navigate through. Don’t settle for any less than you deserve and never stop pursuing what sets your soul on fire.
